Open questions

The arguments nobody has won yet, argued fairly, with the real camps and the evidence that would decide each one. The road is what happened; this is what we still don’t know. When a question settles, it lands on the road as a new stop.

TWELVE LIVE QUESTIONS

The map

Every open question in AI, on one table

Cups are grouped by subject. Size and steam say how much is riding on a question this week. A dashed thread runs between any two that can't be settled apart. Answer one and you've moved the other, whether you meant to or not. Pick one up.

The conversations

Twelve questions, and what would settle each one

None of this is news. These are standing disagreements, and each one is framed the way the people inside it would frame it: the real camps, the evidence that would end the argument, and where it moved last. The sources are the people doing the work. Dwarkesh Patel, Nathan Lambert, Epoch AI, SemiAnalysis, Zvi Mowshowitz, and the labs themselves.

Settled

Questions that have since been settled

Every stop on the road was once a cup on one of these tables. Recently cleared:

“Can a machine find a result human mathematicians missed?”→ settled May 2026 →the Erdős disproof
“Will governments ever control model weights directly?”→ settled Jun 2026 →the Fable 5 export order
“Can open weights reach the frontier?”→ settled Jul 2026 →Kimi K3, 3–5 months behind

You've seen the whole board

Twelve is all of them, as far as we can tell: these are the questions still open. When one gets settled it moves to the road, like the three above.

To take a seat, tap a camp on any question's page. You can change it later. If you have a better source, a sharper way to put an argument, or a side that isn't represented here, use the comments or send us a note.
